THE OTHER 'S' WORD
Circa 1983.

I'm in junior high, or as they were calling it everywhere about then, "Middle School," and I'm playing Scrabble with my Dad.

There is exactly one word I could possibly make with the letters I currently have. A simple three-letter word causing me great stress. Do I take a letter? Do I dare make this word in this situation?

It's a few minutes before I decide, though it feels like an eternity. Finally I just go for it, and put the "S" and "X" down on either side of that open "E." Then quickly sputter, "um, as in male or female..." hoping I am not in trouble.

I am not in trouble. My Dad barely shrugs, and makes his next Scrabble move. He is completely unfazed by the entire experience.

Though I imagine he and Mom laughed it up later.
