The only thing cooler than July 9th would have been... nothing.
Dr. Demento played "Idiot" tonight.
DR. DEMENTO PLAYED "IDIOT" TONIGHT!
Through a convoluted process I set up my VCR to record his show off a website my computer would be pointed to while I was out at dinner, although dinner got canceled and I ended up being at home as it was -- but that setup worked nicely.
I found a 9pm central broadcast and a 10pm one too, and since the signal breakup was pretty brutal, I caught both. Still, I deciphered it all, except a teaser where he mentioned we'd be hearing from 'an idiot' in the next segment.
Intro: "Here's a new one by a man known as Ross."
Outro, after my song & another one played: "And we heard a song called 'Idiot' by a man called Ross. He does his thing in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and we'll let you know if that one becomes commercially available."
OK, so it's not high praise, but he tapes the show 3 weeks in advance, and this was the first week I could have gotten on, and I did in fact get on, so I take that to count for something.
Jason called around midnight to congratulate me -- I'd left him a message that he could hear the show on radio in KC -- and said he'd taped the show in case I wanted a copy.
This week's show also included the Beatles, Elvis, Jerry Lewis, Gilda Radner, TOM LEHRER... and I was sandwiched between Groucho Marx and a song about road rage.
Pretty good company, I'd say.
