News Archives updates from 2006 In 1827, William McIntosh, along with Creeks from Coweta, Broken Arrow, Lochapoka and Big Spring, arrived at the "Three Forks" of the Arkansas, Verdigris and Grand Rivers. By 1839-40, these settlers had spread northward along the Arkansas River where Coweta, Broken Arrow and Tulsa are today. So it was only a matter of time before Coweta would play host to its first Acoustic Ross show. That time is now. That show is this Saturday. That location is The Watering Hole, at 309 Oak Street in Coweta. That audience includes you maybe? The first album is almost out of print again, which means it's about to get reprinted. The new edition will be an upgrade in many ways and should sound about 600% better, so you'll want to invest in a new copy for sure when that comes around. Looking forward, I've quietly posted a remixed, much-better-sounding version of "+3 Sword of Protection" on the SOUNDS page and on the MySpace page. That track and a bunch you've never heard will be featured on the upcoming BRAND NEW Acoustic Ross full-length, to be released in early 2007. Seriously. A belated happy birthday to my Mom, who I didn't get a chance to call yesterday. I promise to call before you even see this post. posted 11.5.06
I'm comPLETEly hooked on the Discovery Channel's Cash Cab. It's a game show that takes place inside a real cab in New York City. It looks just like a normal minivan taxi and picks up riders just as randomly. Once you're in, host Ben Bailey asks random trivia questions and you rack up cash all the way to your destination. There are limits (three wrong answers and you're walking) and a little help is available (including the Street Shout-Out, where a random passerby can help the contestant) and that's pretty much it. I've seen some folks win a buttload of money and some folks kicked out with nothing after only a few blocks. Ben's a great host (thanks to his years of stand-up comedy) and the contestants are invariably fun to watch on their surreal taxi trip. posted 11.2.06 Seriously, some SHOWS! Hey, whaddya know, despite being completely nonexistent through most of 2006, I've managed to get a few more shows booked. Speaking of shows, I've got THREE SHOWS in the next FOUR WEEKS. First up, the 32nd annual FREAKER'S BALL at Cain's Ballroom. I'll be doing a solo set this Saturday at this annual festival and it should be a hoot. I've got a 75% new set padded with a few classics you know and love. Come see me forget the words in front of a live audience!! Partial list of bands and ticket info, as usual, on the Cain's site. Then after a week off to recuperate, it's back-to-back Saturday shows - one at a familiar haunt (Tulsa's Youth Services Coffeehouse) and one at a new one (The Watering Hole, hands down the coolest little dive I've ever been to in Coweta). See the SHOWS page for details on both, then come on out and hear all the new crap before I get sick of it and/or use it on the new record I'll be recording in the next few months. (You read that right.) Speaking of the pending new record, you can now get the existing ones in person at a real store in Tulsa! Go see my new friends over at Tulsa's best new record shop, Under the Mooch (circa 14th & Harvard) and pick one up! They've got an excellent selection (I spent 60 bucks on my first trip and I hardly even looked around), including the complete works of Acoustic Ross & Math Lab, go see for yourself. Speaking of Math Lab, they're still out there working too. I hear they might have a new record in the works soon too, but that singer is always telling tales so I don't know if I buy it. More details here. posted 10.26.06 Shows! While my summer adventure "Gimme the Mike!" gears up for its third season (right now we're picking contestants from the 300 who auditioned this weekend), I've somehow managed to get a few shows booked. First up is the big one - a festival show at Cain's Ballroom called Ballroom Blitz, sort of a spring version of the annual Freaker's Ball. It's this Saturday (April 29) and promises to be a hoot. Also on the bill are the Mudville Project, Redecco, Red Alert, Congress of a Crow, Rook, Team Galaxy, DDS, Xanadu, Stevedore, Rewake, Brian Parton, and a buttload more. Check the Cain's site for more details. Then next week I'm making a return appearance at the Mental Health Association's spring fashion show. I had a great time last year and was happy to be invited back again. Then in June I'll be part of the Tuesday Tunes series at Tulsa Central Library downtown, doing a special lunchtime show there on June 6th. And just for the sake of cross-pollination, Math Lab's holding an EP release party at the Deadtown Tavern on Saturday May 6th. Come see how I've spent my time away from the acoustic antifolk scene for the last two years. More details here. posted 4.25.06 Notice Anything Different? Talk about WAY OVERDUE. The long-awaited (at least by me) site revamp is complete. Take a look around, see what you think. Personally I like it a lot. I finished most of it yesterday, but had to wait to make a few more tweaks today before putting it up. But this way it's launching on my sister's birthday, so that's OK by me. Biggest change, other than the formatting, is that the old News From Around the Bend pages are gone. They'll come back eventually in some form -- the zine just (quietly) celebrated its 15th anniversary -- but the web version deserves better treatment than it was getting here, so it's going on hiatus for a while. Stay tuned. And Math Lab has been in full force lately (the EP is finished and coming soon), but that doesn't mean Acoustic Ross is asleep at the wheel. More shows in the works, more songs in the works, hopefully a new full-length later this year. posted 3.3.06
